In early July 2011 we were the victim of a particularly nasty DDOS Attack (distributed denial of service).
At that time unknown to me, the FBI was investigating scammers using eBay’s VPP Branding to defraud internet car purchasers.
This website has been reporting on scammers that used eBay VPP defrauding good honest eBay members since at least the middle of 2009. So we were 2 years ahead of the FBI when they started investigating the VPP scams.
So i will always suspect that eBay was behind this ddos attack, in an effort to prevent the FBI from seeing how long this fraud has been going on. But that’s just my thoughts on the situation. The attack not only took out ebaymotorssucks.com but several other clients on my dedicated server. Even after i parked the domain by changing the name servers, it took a good 24 hours for the changes to propagate and the server continued to be hammered.
I tried 2 other hosts to put it back online but each time it was knocked offline as quick as it came back online. I then redirected it to my YouTube Channel which worked for a few days, but the attackers soon re-targeted my YouTube channel and took it offline too.
After that i decided to set up a bunch of mirror sites so whoever was doing this would know i couldn’t be silenced easily. These days domain names are real cheap, and believe it or not cheap web hosting with a cPanel can be had for as little as a dollar a month!
It didn’t take long to restore the site to multiple domains, sitemap and submit it to search. So if you come across one of my eBayMotorsSucks.com mirror sites on the web this is the story why they all exist today.
